Heathrow Airport lies around fifteen miles west of central London, and is the city's busiest airport, with five terminals and three train/tube stations: one for terminals 1, 2 and 3, and separate ones for terminals 4 and 5.

The fastest way into London is via the high-speed Heathrow Express.

A much cheaper alternative is to take the Underground's Piccadilly line (Phone: 020/7222 1234, Website: www.tfl.gov.uk/tube), which connects the airport to numerous stations across central London; tickets cost just £4, and trains depart at least every five minutes between 5am and 11.30pm, taking about fifty minutes to reach the centre. If you plan to spend the rest of your arrival day sightseeing, buy a One-Day Travelcard (Zones 1-6) for £6.70.

National Express bus services run from 5am to 9.30pm from Heathrow direct to Victoria Coach Station: they depart every twenty to thirty minutes, take between forty minutes and an hour or more depending on the traffic, and cost £4 single, £8 return.

From midnight, you can take night bus #N9 to Trafalgar Square for a bargain fare of £2; departures are every twenty minutes and journey time is an hour.

Taxis are plentiful, but will set you back between £50 and £70 to central London, and take around an hour (much longer in the rush hour).
